From Beaufort County Community College

The families, instructors and supporters of graduates of Beaufort County Community College celebrated at Washington High School on May 13. Local superintendents, county commissioners, BCCC Foundation board members and BCCC trustees attended the ceremony. In the middle of the audience sat 190 proud, robed students waiting to turn their tassels.

The graduates mostly received associate degrees, be it in nursing, basic education or arts and sciences. Some students will seek employment, while others will continue on to a four-year institution. Some graduates received their high school equivalencies.

Dr. Virginia Hardy gave the keynote address for the evening. Hardy became vice chancellor of student affairs at East Carolina University in 2010, the latest step in her 23-year career at the university. She joined ECU in 1993 as a student counselor in the Brody School of Medicine.

Dr. Barbara Tansey, president of the college, said, “I hope that tonight is not an end to your studies, but the beginning of your life’s adventures.”

Dr. Crystal Ange, vice president of academics, announced the Faculty Member of the Year, Dr. Mike Davis, lead English instructor, and the Staff Member of the Year, Lorie Thurman, assistant to the registrar. She also announced the Dallas Herring Achievement Award recipient, Lisa Reid, the Academic Achievement Award recipient, Christopher Atkinson, and the Robert W. Scott Leadership Award recipient, Pricilla Styons.

BCCC wishes all the best to the departing students and hopes that they return to share their success stories with their former instructors.
