In its second ball game of the year, the Beaufort County Post 15 Jr. Legion team shut out Edenton Post 40 by a 6-0 count Thursday night in Edenton. The Post 15 Pirates relied on pitching, defense, and some timely hitting to win the contest.

Parker Boyd started the game for the Pirates and pitched four effective innings. Boyd gave up only two hits while striking out four Edenton batters. Logan Everette came on in the bottom of the fifth and pitched the remaining three frames to seal the win.

Everette, a rising sophomore lefty, did not give up a hit, and in spite of hitting two Edenton batters, struck out seven in his three innings of work, including five of the last six Edenton batters. In support of their pitchers, the Post 15 defense played error free baseball.

Coach Glenn Marsh was very happy with his two pitchers.

“The pitching was outstanding,” he said. “Both Parker Boyd and Logan Everette threw a lot of first-pitch strikes and got ahead in the count. Basically, they did an awesome job for us today on the mound. I was very proud of both of them.”

On offense, the Pirates plated three in the second inning, two more in the fourth inning and a final run in the sixth to close out the scoring.

In the second, Hunter Sparks led off with a double, which was followed by consecutive singles from Brock Marsh and Boyd. Zach Woolard also got on base when the catcher dropped a called third strike. Grant Talbot then reached via a single. After all of the base hits, Sparks, Boyd, and Woolard scored.

In the fourth inning, Woolard and Reg Bishop collected back-to-back singles. Both scored on a combination of stolen bases and wild pitches. The last Pirate run was scored in the sixth when Tripp Barfield led off with a single. Barfield stole second and subsequently scored on a Bishop single. For the game, the Pirates collected 11 hits.

Due to local area high school football practices, Marsh started a very young squad against the Edenton nine.

“It gave them a good chance, and I am very proud of them,” he said. “They played well and were focused. It’s good to be 2-0.”

This Saturday’s double-header in Manteo has been postponed due to the expected rain. The next game is slated for this coming Monday against Ahoskie at 7 pm at Washington’s Futrell Field.
