From Swan Quarter Volunteer Fire Department

Swan Quarter Volunteer Fire Department recently acquired a used fire engine from Greenville Fire-Rescue. The truck, a 1988 Pierce Lance, will replace SQVFD’s current first-out engine. Some of the department’s personnel undertook the needed mechanical repairs, and the truck has been tested and deemed fit for use.

Before putting it into service, the SQVFD took the engine to BWJ Grafix, of Chocowinity, to have the body refurbished and painted. Using a new color scheme and artwork designed by the SQVFD, BWJ Grafix completely changed the look of the engine.

Chief Jeffrey Stotesberry and President and Assistant Chief Gary Cahoon picked up the truck for the return trip to Swan Quarter on May 19. Both indicated: “Without the support of friends and our community, none of this would be possible.”

“We’d like to thank Greenville Fire-Rescue for thinking of us and the community for their support during our annual fund drives and monthly fundraiser dinners.”

The Swan Quarter VFD was established in 1971 by a group of citizens who were concerned with providing an organized fire safety presence for the community. Since that time, its area of operation has expanded, as has the level of services it provides. Today SQVFD operates with 25 unpaid volunteers who provide not only fire incident response, but also first responder service for medical emergencies. SQVFD also works with the Hyde County Schools to provide fire safety awareness to the youth of the community.
