REMEMBRANCE: For more than 55 years members of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 15 have placed graveside flags at cemeteries to honor and remember those who fought and died for Americans’ freedoms. When it first started, the ladies used hammers and screwdrivers to first make holes in the ground, then stooped down to place the flags on veterans’ graves. As more and more plots filled the cemeteries and the names on the markers became more difficult to read, the group changed their procedure to surround the cemeteries with the flags so that all veterans’ graves were encompassed.
For the sixth year, members of the Washington Police and Fire Services assisted the Auxiliary members in their Memorial Day tradition. Friday, flags were placed at Oakdale, Cedar Hill and Pamlico Memorial Gardens and will remain through the weekend.
The mission of the Auxiliary is to support the American Legion and to honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of our veterans, military and their families both at home and abroad.
