North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory paid a visit to Beaufort County on Saturday to attend both the Aurora Fossil Festival and Bath’s First Port Celebration. In a special ceremony at Bonner’s Point, McCrory presented former Bath Assistant Town Manager Marty Fulton with North Carolina’s highest service award, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
A resident of Bath since the mid-1980s, when her husband, Gary, accepted the position of rector at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Fulton has served the town and the church for decades – in 1990, she became the assistant town manager, where she served until 2005. She was also elected to the Bath Town Council for a term and served on several appointed boards. She became parish administrator in 2000 and remained in that position until her retirement in 2016.
Before the performance of the Coast Line Band at Bonner’s Point, Bath Mayor Jimmy Latham read a proclamation honoring Fulton, telling the assembled crowd at Bonner’s Point, “We are certainly going to miss Marty, the unofficial goodwill ambassador of Bath.” McCrory followed with the presentation of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
