The storm that hit the South Carolina coast this weekend, bringing a wave of thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy rainfall to eastern North Carolina, has been demoted to a post-tropical cyclone as of Monday night.

Labeled a tropical storm upon landfall, Bonnie now has maximum wind speeds of 15 mph and is traveling north at 2 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The National Weather Service in Newport has issued a small-craft advisory along the coast until 2 a.m. Tuesday. Chances of rain and thunderstorms will continue into Tuesday and Wednesday, with at least a 60-percent chance during the afternoon of both days.

On Friday, Beaufort County emergency-response personnel said they were preparing for the possibility of hazardous weather in the area. Personnel is continuing to monitor the situation.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins Wednesday, although it got an early start with Hurricane Alex in January. The hurricane season runs through Nov. 30.
