Get Fit Day draws large crowd

ENGELHARD — About 150-200 people came out for a family-friendly fitness challenge on Saturday at the Davis Youth and Recreation Center in Engelhard.

As part of Get Fit Day, attendees participated in a variety of contests, including a wheel barrel race, sack hop race and obstacle course. The event also included an 8:30 a.m. Zumba session with Tori Jarvis, concessions and a bouncy house.

Vincent Whitfield, who organized the event, said it went pretty well for a first-time event, but one of the major challenges was operating with fewer volunteers than originally anticipated.

“It was kind of chaotic for me,” Whitfield said. “I’m running from here to there. … I had a microphone in my hand running from course to course.”

Despite being short-staffed, he said he has heard positive feedback from those who attended, saying they would like to have another Get Fit Day next year. But Whitfield said he is unsure if it will become an annual event, as it was a big responsibility for him to organize it.

“That’s a good question right there,” he said. “Right now, I said to myself, you don’t know how much work that was.”

The event was meant to provide families with fun, low-cost activities and encourage exercise at the same time, and with or without challenges, it accomplished just that.

On a scale of one to 100, it was a 75 or 80, Whitfield said with a chuckle.

“Other than that (short staff), everything was OK,” he said. “It went fine.”
