Mr. Leon Gray Porter, age 79, a resident of Chocowinity, died Monday, June 13, 2016 at his home.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 16, 2016 at Haw Branch Church of Christ and will be officiated by Jason Kirkman. Burial will follow in the Haw Branch Church of Christ Cemetery. Tony Bright, Fred Porter, Bobby Porter, Mitchell Jackson, Danny Jackson and Donnie Jackson will serve as pallbearers. Tim Bright will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
Mr. Porter was born in Beaufort County on July 19, 1936 to the late Leon Allen Porter and Pearle Hill. On November 1, 1955 he married the former Wilma Jean Jackson who preceded him in death January 17, 2011. He worked as a farmer as well as at PCS for 32 years, retiring in 1996. Mr. Porter was also a gunsmith and worked on firearms for Base Camp and Awesome Outdoors. He was a member of Haw Branch Church of Christ.
Survivors include two sons, Tab Porter, Kelvin Porter and his wife Brandi, all of Chocowinity, five grandchildren and a sister, Edna Hill Porter of Aurora.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a sister, Hazel Porter Bright.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Haw Branch Church of Christ, 1501 Haw Branch Church Road, Chocowinity, NC 27817, or the American Cancer Society, 930-B Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington.
