Annual feeding program offers mobile sites

The county’s summer feeding program is in full swing and debuted two new mobile sites this year.

The annual, federally funded program, sponsored by Care-O-World Early Learning Center and Beaufort County Schools, is designed to serve families in need and offers free breakfast and lunch for children under 18 on weekdays, from June 15 to Aug. 19.

Adults can also come eat, but breakfast is a charge of $3 and lunch is $5.

The program includes four open-to-the-public sites across the county, two mobile sites in Washington and closed sites at locations such as Care-O-World and Washington Assembly of God.

Teresa Clayton, who heads up the program through Care-O-World, said Pastor Jim Reed of Asbury United Methodist Church approached organizers with the idea of running the new mobile sites. The church wanted to come up with a project to give back to the community.

After receiving training, a slew of church volunteers now set up on River Road and Thomas Lane in Washington every weekday to feed children in need, according to Clayton.

Along with the mobile feeding sites, the program has also increased its goal of meals served to 60,000 by the end of the summer, she said. Last year, about 40,000 meals were served.

Clayton said the overall goal is to serve as many families as possible, and essentially make up for those meals the children would’ve received at school. She said any families who are struggling to find their next meal should come to one of the open sites and take advantage of a hot meal.

“We have plenty of food,” Clayton said. “We want to serve all the children we can this summer.”
