A drug bust ended with a hospital visit after the suspect swallowed a bag of crack cocaine, according to investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit.

Investigators were executing a search warrant at the Clifton Meadows residence of Adgrikist Lee Floyd, 30, in Washington, when they noticed Floyd placed some of the crack cocaine found at the home in his mouth, according to Lt. Russell Davenport, head of the drug unit.

“It was packaged for resale. We saw it in his mouth and under his tongue,” Davenport said. “We took him to the ER and had him treated.”

Davenport said the risk was that the bag would break open in Floyd’s stomach, potentially causing a heart attack.

“It was more than about collecting evidence — it was about saving his life,” Davenport said. “It’s part of the job: trying to save a life when they try to eat the evidence.”

According to a press release from the drug unit, investigators found crack, digital scales, plastic bags used to repackage it and other items used to manufacture crack cocaine from powder cocaine. Floyd was charged with four counts of possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school, manufacturing crack cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting a public officer.

His bond was at $200,000, which is unusually high amount for drug arrests in Beaufort County. Davenport said the high bond was due to the presence of an infant in Floyd’s custody, as well as the drug sales taking place near John Cotten Tayloe Elementary School.

Davenport said there will likely be more arrests related to this case.

“It’s still part of an ongoing investigation. During surveillance of him, we identified other people involved in the distribution of crack cocaine,” Davenport said. “We’ll be continuing the investigation and making more arrests.”
