NWS releases severe thunderstorm alert

The National Weather Service is reporting a strong line of thunderstorms affecting east-central Beaufort County and mainland Hyde County.

As of 8:30 p.m., the storms were traveling east at 50 mph. Winds in excess of 40 mph and half-inch hail are possible.

The NWS office in Newport/Morehead is also reporting wind damage in the county. According to Tideland EMC, residents are also experiencing power outages, with 555 members on the Bonnerton circuit in the Edward area and 208 outages in the Ponzer area.

“Elsewhere, we have smaller outages, including reports of downed trees. All on-call crews have been dispatched,” a Tideland social media post stated.

Stay indoors if possible. If driving, watch for flooding and potentially dangerous road conditions.

A severe thunderstorm watch until 1 a.m. Wednesday was lifted.
