BELHAVEN — Thousands of spectators lined the streets of Belhaven on Monday morning for the town’s traditional July 4 parade, part of a four-day celebration of America’s birthday.

This year’s parade was probably the biggest in the town’s history, with over 200 units registered, according to Belhaven Mayor Adam Mayor. Participants included fire trucks from throughout the county, elected officials and candidates, church groups, businesses, civic organizations and a bevy of beauty queens.

“It’s a big deal for Belhaven,” said Greg Satterthwaite, a member of the Belhaven Celebrations Committee that planned the festivities. “We get the most people here for July 4; people come from all over the country for this.”

Satterthwaite pointed out that Belhaven marked its 74th celebration this year.

“That’s phenomenal,” he said. “It’s just a fun time in Belhaven; it’s just an awesome time. It’s something everybody looks forward to all year long.”

The celebration kicked off July 1 with games, a pie contest and a veteran green light ceremony. The following day there were more games, entertainment, dunking booth, hot dog eating contest, street dance and the crowning of Young Miss and Miss Independence. Activities on July 3 included games and entertainment by local performers.

The biggest celebration was saved for July 4, however. Little Miss Independence contestants took to the stage early that morning, while the parade route quickly became a beehive of activity as young and the young-at-heart waited for the procession to roll. Vendors sold everything from fish sandwiches to sunglasses, and children lined up for carnival rides throughout the day. There was a lawn mower pull and a breakfast for dignitaries. Belhaven residents and visitors endured the heat and humidity of the afternoon to attend the Pantego Mud Run, and more local talent kept everyone entertained on the lawn of the Wilkinson Center. Fireworks ended the four-day festival with a bang.
