The Beaufort County Board of Education took another step in nailing down its proposed projects for the 2016-2017 capital budget at a meeting on Tuesday.

The board voted unanimously to go ahead with about 40 projects over the course of this fiscal year, which began July 1.

Projects ranged from system-wide painting and camera installations, to installing egress doors to guide visitors to the main offices, and maintenance jobs. Among the most expensive items are: camera system installations, totaling $300,000; system-wide technology maintenance, totaling $400,000; an entrance area at Chocowinity Primary School, totaling $32,800; and a new intercom system at Eastern Elementary School, totaling $25,000.

“We need to make sure we’re representing schools in all of the areas,” Beaufort County Schools Superintendent Dr. Don Phipps said. “We’ve tried to be proactive and smart with what we do.”

In a previous meeting on July 19, board members were charged with narrowing down capital projects to fit within an $866,920 allotment from Beaufort County commissioners — $466,920 is to go toward safety and security and $400,000 toward system-wide technology.

Phipps recommended that the cuts come from the safety and security portion.

The commissioners allotted the school district a total of $990,639 for this fiscal year, meaning a total of $123,719 is left over for additional capital projects.

In other business on Tuesday, the board also approved a motion to hold all 2017 high school graduations on June 10. This year, graduations were held over the course of a week, with the exception of the Early College High School students who graduated in May.

Several of the board members expressed approval of the sole date, as it will keep the graduation season concise and will be easier to work into schedules.

The Early College’s earlier graduation date was set for May 19, 2017.

“We’re going to try it this year and see how it works,” Phipps said.
