The Washington (evening) Rotary Club met the evening of Aug. 4 at the Washington Yacht & Country Club. After a social period in the Upper Deck, members gathered in the Pamlico Room for dinner and business. Shannon Carter called the meeting to order and Zeno Edwards led in the Pledge of Allegiance. Members joined in on one verse of “My Country ’Tis of Thee” and Chaplain Bruce Rabon gave thanks for the meal. Guest speakers for the evening were Barbara Dell Carter, wife of member Shannon, and Lourdes Williamson, wife of member Todd. Both are second-grade teachers at John Cotten Tayloe School. The ladies are raising funds for their “Read Aloud Resources” program. This is a valuable tool for the teachers in achieving North Carolina Common Core Standards. The funds will be used to ensure each second-grade teacher will receive three books for their classroom. Barbara Dell and Lourdes made a great presentation and answered many questions. The meeting closed with James Gaynor leading in reciting The Four Way Test of the Things We Think, Say and Do.
