A 10-year-old boy has died, and his 42-year-old father’s condition remains critical after an incident at a local pool Monday evening, according to authorities.

Emergency personnel responded to a call from Days Inn, a hotel located at 916 Carolina Ave. in Washington, at 5:24 p.m.

Upon arrival, crews found both patients unresponsive beside the pool, and passersby had already begun performing CPR, according to a press release from Washington Police Department.

Emergency crews took over CPR, continuing life-saving efforts for 10 minutes on the boy and 29 minutes on the man, before transporting them to Vidant Beaufort Hospital, according to Capt. William Chrismon.

The boy, identified as Demetrius Emmanuel Palmer Jr., later died, and his father, Demetrius Emmanuel Palmer Sr., was transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for further treatment.

Fire Chief Robbie Rose said Washington EMS, Chocowinity EMS and other surrounding squads responded to the scene. Rose said other squads were called in due to reports of more than one victim.

Palmer lists his current hometown on social media as Brooklyn, New York, and is listed as employed by Independence Residences Inc., also out of New York.

Although the two had ties to Beaufort County, more details regarding their stay were not immediately available.

“I can’t speculate a whole lot because the entire investigation is not complete yet,” Chrismon said. “As of right now, we believe it to be an accidental drowning.”
