Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease that leads to walking, mobility and balance impairments. Symptoms include muscle tremors, decreased mobility, muscle stiffness, stooped posture, mask-like facial expression and progressive weakness. An individualized treatment program is indicated and, because of the progressive nature of this disease, should be updated as symptoms change.

The treatment focuses on sensory recalibration with the goal of improving the fullness of whole body movements. Research on LSVT BIG has documented improved ratings on tests of functioning in people with Parkinson’s disease following treatment that includes performing activities of daily living with improved ease, improved balance, faster walking with improved stride length and increase trunk rotation. This type of practice is necessary to optimize carryover of better movement in everyday life.

With this certification, both Heather and Rhonda are able to provide a standardized treatment protocol that has been specifically developed to address the unique movement impairments that have been found to affect individuals with Parkinson’s disease.
