Police department settles into new home

BELHAVEN — Belhaven Police Department is settling into a new location.

As of last week, the department had moved into the old train depot on West Main Street, which was previously occupied by the Belhaven Community Chamber of Commerce.

Belhaven’s police force was housed in a temporary mobile home across the street after flooding forced the department out of its old location years ago. Town Manager Woody Jarvis said Belhaven paid about $1,000 a month to rent the home, and hopes to save some money by ceasing payment for the temporary housing now that the department has a permanent location.

Jarvis said the town is waiting for the renting company to come retrieve the mobile home.

At the Aug. 22 Board of Aldermen meeting, Jarvis reported that the depot building underwent some renovations this summer, including a new electrical panel and changes to accommodate an evidence locker, but the officers now have a completely functional facility.

Chief F.P. Clingenpeel said the department was in the temporary location for several years, and the main difference in moving was going from many rooms down to essentially one big room.

He said the building itself is sturdier and in a quieter location, and the transition is complete except for a few final tweaks. The department also hopes to have a new sign in the next couple of weeks.

“There are some things that we still have to do,” Clingenpeel said. “Making sure the place runs as smoothly as it did in the other building.”

He said moving is always an ordeal, but other town departments were willing to pitch in and help.

“You don’t realize what you have until you want to move,” Clingenpeel said. “I’m happy with it.”

The Chamber of Commerce moved out of the depot building in June after about 30 years there when the Town of Belhaven issued a 30-day notice to vacate in May — a move following Mayor Adam O’Neal’s and board members’ assertions that the group failed to be working with the town’s best interest in mind.

Chamber officials denied those accusations. The group is now located on East Main Street in the location of the former Belhaven Senior Center.
