The amount of state money coming to Tyrrell County Schools is based in large part on the number of students enrolled in the county’s three schools.

Each year, Tyrrell County Schools tracks enrollment numbers for the first 10 days of school. Current enrollments are: Tyrrell Elementary School, 308; Columbia Middle School, 119; and Columbia High School, 171.

The total K-13 enrollment is 598 students, which exceeds the state projection for TCS of 590 students. Tyrrell Schools ended the 2015-16 school year with 579 students.

If state projections exceed actual first or second month enrollment projections by an overall 2 percent or 100 students, then adjustments are made to the classroom teachers, instructional support, teacher assistants, textbooks, and career and technical education allotments, Dr. Will Hoffman, superintendent, explained.
