The Tyrrell County Board of Commissioners has declared a state of emergency throughout the county beginning at 9 a.m. Oct. 5.

The approach of Hurricane Matthew prompted the action, which was taken at 2 p.m. Oct. 4, while the board was in regular session.

No specific restrictions were put into effect immediately, but the chairman of the board, in consultation with the county manager, was authorized to impose prohibitions and restrictions allowable by law when necessary, suitable and proper to meet the circumstances.

A day earlier county and Columbia officials cancelled the 25th annual Scuppernong River Festival, set for Saturday, Oct. 8, an outdoor event that usually draws 7,000 or more people to downtown Columbia.

The Columbia Rotary Club postponed its annual pancake breakfast, also set for Saturday morning.

And the Columbia High School Class of 1951 cancelled its reunion on Saturday, which was to celebrate the 65th anniversary of that group’s graduation.
