Downtown needs our help more than ever

It has been nearly two weeks since Hurricane Matthew ravaged eastern North Carolina and Washington. While many of us were blessed to have been spared from disaster, some were not. Our every thought and prayer should be with all of those that were displaced or left homeless.

The biggest problem we had in the central business district was the loss of electricity for two days. We do not think how damaging that can be to our businesses. Going two days without selling or serving anything is very costly as we approach a peak time of the season. With Thanksgiving and Christmas around the corner, it was hurtful to our downtown economy. This is not a picture of doom; rather, it’s a cry to rally and show our positive and progressive sides. You will never hear me not be enthusiastic.

The Washington Harbor District Alliance will attempt to help our merchants in many different ways and we need your support. At a recent board meeting, it was said that we need to exhaust our energies in letting merchants and citizens (in and around Washington) know we are back, stronger than ever. This writer has been a member of many organizations but has never been as proud to be a small part of such a caring organization as the WHDA. This group will put their “money where their mouth is.” Every event from here on out will be centered around supporting our central business district. People need to know that “Together, we are Washington,” and we are back. Bring it on!

We are going to market every upcoming event more than ever. With our Hometown Holidays and Festival of Lights in the harbor, we will be full blast with Santa Claus (three nights a week), his elves, carolers and holding Farmers Market at nights along with the yachts being lighted for everyone to walk or ride by and enjoy. An added feature this year will be two Saturdays that Mom and Dad can shop while their children enjoy a movie at the Brown library.

Our downtown economy may have taken a hit, but please trust me in that WHDA is going to be there for everyone. Whether you are a Friend of the Alliance or not, we are here to serve you and give back to our community. My only hope is that our citizens and patrons will do the same. Our small businesses are the backbone of our economy in the central business district, and we all will be there for them. When you think about buying or dining, please stay right here in downtown Washington.

Please watch WITN, our Facebook page, your radio and the WDN for all events. You have heard me say many times that Washington is the best, and that will never change, but now, we need to prove it. Adversity may build character but it also will expose character. Together, we are Washington. Let us all help our downtown businesses and restaurants and also have a great holiday season together.

Thank you for the compliments and for reading these articles over the last four months. It is a pleasure. Like always, please shop, dine and play in beautiful Washington and if you get the chance …Take a walk with the H-Rob.
