Saturday at Smoke on the Water, Washington Daily News publisher Ashley Vansant pulled the lucky ticket and announced that Joe Bartlett had won the Sound Rivers handcrafted kayak canoe. Joe was not present at the drawing, but the builder of the canoe, Edward Rhine, delivered the collectable treasure to Joe’s cabin home in Long Point subdivision. Butch and Beth Harden assisted Ed with the delivery of the kayak canoe. Joe was nearly doing jumping jacks of joy while receiving his prize. Joe’s ticket was one of 500 that were sold to raise $10,000 for Sound Rivers to use toward legal fees for the environmental organization’s petition against the state and Martin Marietta Materials, a mining company that could potentially discharge 12 million gallons of hard iron groundwater (every 24 hours) into the brackish saltwater fish nursery of Blounts Creek. So many friends and people who care about the environment and waters generously bought tickets to stop the madness.
