Tyrrell County Schools transports approximately 347 students daily totaling more than 600 miles on 11 yellow buses, according to initial reports for the 2016-17 school year.

The estimated cost to operate the yellow bus fleet is $2.17 per mile, which includes salaries, oil, tires, repairs, fuel, benefits and insurances.

Those figures indicate it costs an average of $3.75 to transport each student from home to school and return her/him home each day.

The Division of Transportation Services within the State Department of Public Instruction in Raleigh will determine the school district’s overall efficiency based on these reports to determine next year’s funding allotment, Dr. Will Hoffman, Tyrrell superintendent, explained.
