CHOCOWINITY — A Relay for Life event with a different twist showcased canines during fundraising activities held Nov. 12 in Chocowinity.

Bark for Life of Beaufort County raised money for the American Cancer Society and those participating were invited to bring along their pet dogs for a morning filled with fun activities.

Opening ceremonies featured a blessing of the animal offered by Pastor Richard Sheriff of First Baptist Church in Chocowinity. Cancer survivors and fighters were joined by supporters and canine companions for the event, which also included a “kiss the pooch” kissing booth and a “paws for a cause” photo booth.

Shelia Edwards and her pet Sophia were among those taking part in the inaugural event.

“My dad died in 1980 of kidney cancer, and now that type of cancer is curable,” Edwards said. “It’s not just for him but for friends who are dealing with it now and for those who have beat it.”

Edwards and Sophia were winners in the owner and dog look-alike competition. Other contests included best costumes and a best trick event. Fundraising activities also included a hot dog sale and raffles.
