Mr. Alvin Thomas Edwards, age 88, a resident of Blounts Creek, NC, died Friday, November 18, 2016 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital of Washington.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington. The service will be officiated by Rev. Joel Cannon and Pastor Charles Latham. Burial will follow in the Moore Family Cemetery of Chocowinity. Randy Smith, Walter Cratch, Ricky Hollowell, Dave Newman, Brian Johnson and Joe Sottile will serve as pallbearers, and honorary pallbearers will be Billy Slade, Lewis Toler, Aubrey Gibbs and Jeff Harris.

The family will receive friends 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour on Tuesday at the funeral home and other times at the home.

Mr. Edwards was born in Beaufort County on November 25, 1927, son of the late William Thomas “Willie” Edwards and the late Muzie Lee Wells Edwards. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from April 17th, 1951 until April 11th, 1953. During this time, he was stationed in Ft. Hood Texas and overseas in Germany. On June 16, 1955 he married the former Shelby “Jean” Jewell who survives.

He worked as a self-employed farmer and also was a retired area foreman with the NC Dept. of Transportation where he assisted in building many of the roads we rely on today in Eastern North Carolina. Mr. Edwards was a member of the Antique Automobile Club of America and was a founding member of House of Faith Ministries now known as Southpoint Community Church of Chocowinity. His faith made him an inspiration not only to his family but to his many friends. All who knew him benefited from his unique ability to entertain with the numerous stories and tales of his long and loving life.

Surviving along with his wife Jean of the home are two sons: Billy Edwards (Sandra) and Mark Edwards, both of Chocowinity; a daughter: Faith Edwards Archer (Brad) of Denton, TX; a sister: Mary Edwards Briskin (Manny) of Arlington, VA and three grandchildren: Ashley Archer, Victoria Archer and John Edwards (Jessica). Mr. Edwards was predeceased by a sister: Lucille Carowan Dibble.
