Tyrrell County native Christopher T. Hassell was one of 47 new troopers that graduated from the basic State Highway Patrol School on Nov. 18.

The celebration ended 15 weeks of extensive academic and physical training.

The 10 a.m. ceremony was held at the Colonial Baptist Church in Cary. The oath of office was administered by District Court Judge Harold T. Jarrell, Jr.

Frank L. Perry, Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, and Col. Bill Grey, commander of the State Highway Patrol, provided remarks.

The cadets will report to their respective duty stations Dec. 7 to begin a rigorous field-training program.

Hassell was assigned to Tyrrell County, the only new trooper to be stationed in his home county.
