Tyrrell County Manager David Clegg expects to open bids for the Goat Neck Area Sewer Project on Jan. 5.

The project calls for construction of wastewater collection lines from the service area, in the northeast corner of the county, along Fort Landing, Sound Side and New roads to the Town of Columbia treatment plant on North Road Street.

Individual household connections in Goat Neck community will reduce the number of households with ground-absorption septic systems prone to failure during high water events. Community residents have had access to county water service for a decade or more.

The $3-million project is funded primarily with federal Community Development Block Grant funds.

The Goat Neck project’s construction is set to begin as the final phases of the more extensive Scuppernong sewer construction project are completed in the northwest sector of the county. Scuppernong’s wastewater is treated and disposed of by the Town of Creswell.

The Scuppernong sewer system is operated by the Tyrrell County Utilities Department, as will be the Goat Neck system.
