2016 Daily News All-County Football Selections

Another season of Beaufort County football has come and gone. For Southside, the adage “the more things change, the more they stay the same” couldn’t be more true.

The Seahawks entered this season without Lawrence Brown and Matt Baxter — the elite running backs that helped them to their first regional-championship appearance in over a decade — nor much of the offensive line that blocked for them.

They didn’t miss a beat, though. An experienced defense led by senior linebacker and captain Hunter Sparks, and a talented secondary, assisted Southside in returning to the semifinal for a rematch against Plymouth.

The aforementioned adage is far from the truth for Northside and Washington. Not a lot changed for the Panthers. They returned a wealth of starters who paved the way for Northside’s best season since 2004. They started off 4-0, and the group earned its first playoff win in a 61-12 lambasting of Rocky Mount Prep in the first round.

Not a whole lot has stayed the same for Washington. The Pam Pack made it all the way to the state championship two years ago, but was blanked in the first round last year and missed out altogether this year.

It was a tumultuous season from the get go. Junior quarterback Frederick Holscher, who had no varsity experience going into the season, was slotted into the starting signal caller role mere days before the season opener at Havelock.

The Pam Pack went on to lose its first six games of the season. Behind a talented defense and some young playmakers, Washington managed to topple its first three conference opponents. It put it in position to earn at least a share of the league title, which would have guaranteed a playoff berth, but the team fell apart in the final two weeks of the season.

Things went from bad to worse when now-former head coach Sport Sawyer resigned shortly after the end of the season. However, things are looking up. Perhaps some new blood at the helm, in addition to all the key players set to return next year, can get the Pam Pack off to the right start as it rebuilds.
