A Washington man has been charged with murder by Washington police.

Maurice Andrea Gardner, also known as Maurice Andrea McCullough, 38, was arrested in the early hours of Friday morning, after an argument between Gardner and Dean Marshall Wendell Williams, 59, resulted in Williams’ death, according to Stacy Drakeford, director of Washington Police and Fire Services.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:15 a.m. in the front yard of a residence at 308 E. 14th St., where both men live, and police were notified through a 911 call.

“It was some type of argument. I haven’t got the full details as to what the argument was, but there was a disagreement between the two,” Drakeford said.

During the altercation, Williams suffered gunshot wounds, but Drakeford said it was unclear how many times Williams was shot.

“We’re still waiting on the autopsy report to come back before we make a determination on that,” Drakeford said.

He said the two men are not related, and investigators are still trying to determine the relationship between them.

“That, we’re still trying to figure out, but we know that both of them stayed at the residence,” Drakeford said.

According to the North Carolina Department of Corrections website, Gardner’s criminal history dates back to 1994. He was released from prison in April, having served a little less than 10 years of a 13-year, six-month sentence.

Gardner is currently charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was placed in the Beaufort County Detention Center under no bond, pending his first appearance before a judge, according to a press release from Washington police.
