Fifth-graders at Chocowinity Middle School celebrated the completion of their DARE training with Deputy Treasure Godard on Dec. 7. The students were working with Godard during the semester to learn more about the DARE — Drug Abuse Resistance Education — program and how to be drug free. As a part of the program, students participated in an essay contest, writing about the things they had learned in the DARE program and how they would use these tools in their own lives. Pictured are winners from each homeroom: McKenzie Edwards, Laney Linton, Cameron Moore, Savannah Trower and Leanna Hudson, with Linton winning the top prize for her essay. The Daren Award, given to the student nominated by the fifth-grade teachers who has displayed the ability to make safe and responsible decisions, stay out of trouble and set a good example for their peers, was presented to Lilly Ann Davis. Special recognition was given to Principal Kimberly Gibbs, Assistant Principal Brianna Williams, Beaufort County Sheriff Ernie Coleman and Sgt. Walter Zerniak for their assistance in making the DARE program available at Chocowinity Middle School.
