Finding the right fit

The right fit is important to so many things in life, whether it’s a career, a relationship or a place to live. Washington found the right fit for its head football coach opening when it hired Jon Blank.

Blank knows the ins and outs of the Pam Pack football program, as well as the entire athletic community at Washington. He’s served as the team’s defensive coordinator for 11 years, and has other experience with the team at both the varsity and junior varsity levels. He’s also served as the school’s athletic director for almost two years.

Washington reaffirmed its commitment to championship-caliber football with Tuesday’s hire. During his tenure as head coach, Sport Sawyer led the Pam Pack to what Blank called its most successful decade ever. It included numerous conference titles and a trip to the 2014 2-A state championship.

Blank served on Sawyer’s staff since he arrived in 2004. Now it’s his duty to take Washington back to the top of the mountain. He got off to the right start as soon as Sawyer resigned. Blank and the remaining coaches set up an offseason workout regimen for the returning football players, which was something that stood out during the interviewing process.

More importantly, Blank, in all his experience with Washington athletics and the football team, knows all about the symbiotic relationship between the Pam Pack and the Washington community. He’s seen the overwhelming support as the town sent off the team to the state championship, and he helped give back to it in the form of camps and other opportunities for the local youth.

Blank is the right fit in more ways than just as a football coach. He didn’t want to be any head coach — he wanted to be Washington’s head coach.
