Grading Out: Lady Pack, Terra Ceia rolling

After a week off, Terra Ceia continued its winning ways by picking up victories in back-to-back games on Thursday and Friday. The Knights still haven’t lost a game since their season opener over two months ago.

Washington’s girls’ basketball team took the next step in what has been a strong season. The Lady Pack had a strong showing in non-conference action, but started 0-2 in 2-A Eastern Plains Conference play. It picked up its first league win at Beddingfield on Friday.

Momentum is at a premium at this point in the season, especially as Beaufort County schools have exams to conquer, too. Here are this week’s standout athletes.

DARIA JONES, WASHINGTON

Daria Jones typically makes herself comfortable under the basket. She did so against Beddingfield as she dominated the defensive glass, and was a post presence on the offensive end, too.

Jones jumpstarted the Lady Pack offense in an atypical way, though. She drained three-consecutive 3-pointers from the same spot in the corner. The early flurry gave Washington an 11-4 lead. She later added points in the paint and from the charity stripe.

SHAIQUAN MOORE, TERRA CEIA

Terra Ceia won by a landslide in a conference game on Thursday. The Knights then turned around and handled John Paul II the next day in non-conference play. Shaiquan Moore scored 48 points between the two games.

Moore netted a game-best 30 points in a 69-52 win on Friday. He also hauled in eight rebounds and had six steals. Moore was the latest instance of how any Terra Ceia player can explode on any given night.

NAZZIR HARDY, WASHINGTON

Washington played its first game under interim coach Ralph Biggs at Beddingfield on Friday. The Pam Pack came up short, but change doesn’t happen overnight. The team used more motion on offense, and Nazzir Hardy seemed to benefit.

Hardy was able to score from point-blank range and from distance. He had three layups in the first quarter — the third of which gave Washington a 14-13 lead at the end of the period — and a mid-range basket to finish the period with eight points.

DREW FERGUSON, WASHINGTON

Drew Ferguson doesn’t lose much, and neither does Washington’s wrestling team. Ferguson and the Pam Pack rolled to a dominant first-place showing. It finished with 200 points. Corinth Holders came in second with 153 points.

Ferguson was one of the team’s three wrestlers to earn first, joining Carson Asby and Marcus Sneed. Ferguson pinned Cardinal Gibbons’ Derek Rose in the first-place match.
