The Washington (evening) Rotary Club met Thursday at the Washington Yacht & Country Club.

After a period of fellowship in the Upper Deck, members assembled in the Pamlico Room, where club president Dr. David McLawhorn convened the meeting.

Judge Sam Grimes led in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, Bartow Houston had the group join in the singing of “My Country ’tis of Thee,” and Capt. Bruce Rabon, of the Salvation Army, offered prayer.

Bill Wall provided an update on the planning for this year’s fishing tournament, the club’s major fundraiser.

President McLawhorn called on Sandy Mitchell, program chairman for the evening, who gave brief but informative remarks about “Retire NC,” after which he introduced Debra Torrence, director of Arts of the Pamlico.

Ms. Torrence is also serving in a leadership role with local efforts aimed at having Washington become certified as a “Retire NC” city.

This marketing outreach entity is, essentially, a network that assists cities, towns and counties in enticing retirees to settle in their respective communities.

“Retire NC” is a certification program run by Economic Development Partnership of NC.

Among the benefits of being a part of this marketing endeavor are an increase in local sales and property taxes, an increase in jobs and stimulation of economic sectors, an increase in home sales and new home construction, advantages for community growth, and an increase in volunteer pool.

She spoke specifically about many marketing techniques “Retire NC” offers certified member towns-counties.

Following a question-and-answer exchange, President McLawhorn thanked her for a most informative presentation, then presented her with the highly coveted Rotary pen.

Rocky Jacobs led members in reciting the Rotary 4-Way Test, after which President McLawhorn adjourned the meeting.
