Beaufort County Community College will be holding its inaugural Health Fair to bring together community members with vendors in the county to improve their health.
This free event on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Building 10 will host 20 health care and fitness vendors.
Beaufort County Health Department, Garmin Connect, Agape Clinic, Cross Therapeutics, Fitness Unlimited, Boys & Girls Club, Raised in a Barn Farm and Eagle’s Wings Food Pantry will participate in this three-fold event. All the vendors will display and provide information to give to the public.
The health fair will include health and wellness, nutrition and fitness and health education.
There will be a bicycle rodeo event for kids at 3:30 p.m., as well. The health fair welcomes all families and children of all ages. Vendors will be giving away free food samples, giveaways, massages and local community-garden items.
“A lot of people are not aware of the wonderful health resources in the county,” said Julie Crippen, grant writer for BCCC. “No matter what your income is, there is a resource out there to get you on a positive track to improve your health.”
The Health Fair continues on BCCC’s grant-funded efforts to improve health outcomes in Beaufort County. The Beau-Fitt program is an initiative to help improve health outcomes community-wide in Beaufort County.
According to a 2014 community health assessment, Beaufort County has higher rates of mortality from lung and prostate cancer, stroke and heart disease than the North Carolina average. The program hopes to excite community members about healthier eating and physical fitness. BCCC’s IMFITT 1-mile fitness trail with exercise stations is open to the public, with information at each piece of equipment about how to use it and what muscle groups are targeted.
BCCC will also host a volunteer training session on March 8 at 10 a.m. in Building 10 for people interested in setting up community gardens.
If interested in the bike rodeo, please contact Sonia Armstrong at 252-940-6211 or sonia.armstrong@beaufortccc.edu, as it is on a first-come, first-served basis with a limited number of bicycles available. Children may also bring their own bike and helmet to participate.
