Washington Police identified the victim of a fatal hit and run Tuesday night and continue to seek the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision.

The incident occurred on the 2000 block of West 15th Street at about 7:45 p.m., when a pedestrian crossing West 15th Street was struck by a vehicle traveling toward West Fifth Street.

The pedestrian, identified as 59-year-old Hope Moore, of Hoytville, Ohio, was staying at the Hampton Inn and had crossed the street to dine in one of the restaurants in the Cherry Run shopping center at the corner of West Fifth and West 15th streets, according to Capt. William Chrismon, spokesman for the police department. She was returning to the hotel when she was hit.

The driver of the vehicle that hit Moore left the scene without rendering aid, according to a police department press release.

Now investigators are asking for help from the public to identify that vehicle and driver.

Chrismon said West 15th Street is a both a busy road, and a dark one, but he did not know if lighting played a factor in the incident. The police department is investigating several vehicles that may have been witnesses or involved in the collision.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Washington Police had identified one of the witnesses to the accident. Chrismon said the investigation is ongoing.

Chrismon said Moore was in Washington for a job interview with a local business. She is survived by a husband, three daughters, a stepson and 10 grandchildren.

Police are asking anyone with information about the hit and run to contact Washington Police Department at 252-946-1444 or Beaufort County Crime Stoppers at 252-974-6400.
