Police have arrested the person believed to be the driver in the fatal hit and run in Washington on Tuesday night.

According to Washington Police Department spokesman Capt. William Chrismon, Tiffany Tarail Baez, 41, of Lindbeth Drive in Greenville, turned herself in at the Washington Police Department on Thursday afternoon. Baez was accompanied by an attorney, Chrismon said, and she is currently charged with felony hit and run and driving with a revoked license.

Baez is accused of driving away from the scene after a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle on West 15th Street near the Hampton Inn in Washington. The incident resulted in the death of 59-year-old Hope Moore, of Hoytville, Ohio. Moore was staying at the hotel and had crossed the street to buy dinner at one of the restaurants in the Cherry Run shopping center located at the intersection of West 15th and West Fifth streets. At approximately 7:45 p.m., she was returning to the hotel when she was struck by a Nissan Altima, according to Chrismon.

Moore, who was in town for a job interview with a local business, is survived by a husband, three daughters, a stepson and 10 grandchildren, according to Chrismon. The family was informed of the arrest Thursday afternoon.

Investigators on Wednesday put out a call for assistance to help find witnesses to the fatal collision, and Chrismon said the push for information may have been a factor in Baez surrendering herself to authorities. He said he did not know if Baez has given a reason as to why no assistance was rendered to the injured Moore.

A press release stated police are working with the District Attorney’s Office, and additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.

Baez was placed in Beaufort County Detention Center with a $50,000 bond.
