The Kiwanis Club of Washington celebrated its 70th anniversary during its regular meeting Feb. 28 at King Chicken. Speaking to the group, Les King, Carolinas district governor of Kiwanis, acknowledged the considerable contribution to the community provided by the club over the years and encouraged membership growth, especially targeted to younger members.

“The local Kiwanis Club is more important to the community than to Kiwanis,” King said, and encouraged the membership to, “expand, grow, stay-the-course and do the good stuff.”

Speaking as a member of the community, Brownie Futrell, former publisher of the Washington Daily News, recalled the many benefits of growing up in a community with projects and opportunities sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. He also recalled several Daily News employees who were active and dedicated club members.

As part of the meeting, club President Gil Davis presented the Kiwanian of the Year award to Curtis Brookshire, honoring his decade of service to the club as secretary/treasurer.

The Kiwanis Club of Washington meets each Tuesday for lunch at King Chicken on Carolina Avenue, Washington. The club welcomes prospective members who have an interest in service to the community.
