Green turn arrows might be all it takes

To the Editor:
I am writing to express my concern over the proposed N.C. Department of Transportation 15th Street widening project which is being considered for approval by the Washington City Council.
As a resident of East 12th Street, I do not want our access to Brown Street and 15th Street closed by making a dead-end turn-around at the end of our street. But, that is the proposed NCDOT plan. I believe closing the east end of 12th Street will only create more traffic on 13th and 14th streets, which are not only residential, but also narrower streets with many cars parked street side.
Also, the projected widening of 15th Street will potentially mean the displacement of those residents who live on 15th Street. Businesses along 15th Street stand to lose parking spaces and/or their businesses, as well. There will not be any capability for left-hand turns as the projects calls for several U-turn areas along the almost 2-mile project from the hospital to U.S. Highway 17.
As a resident of this town for over 30 years, many changes have taken place that have enhanced the beauty and attractiveness of Little Washington. But this proposed project, I believe, is one that is not necessary. The project is proposed to minimize traffic accidents on 15th Street. Left turn, green arrows at the major intersections along 15th Street would do well to enhance the traffic flow and possibly minimize accidents. The Washington City Council should, at least, look into the cost of implementing left turn green arrows at those intersections before committing to this project that could disrupt families and businesses along 15th Street and 12th Street.
