Harris, Lady Pack decimate Northern Nash

After two scoreless innings on a cool Friday evening, Northern Nash stuck first with a run in the top of the third. Washington scored the next 16 — eight apiece in the third and fourth frames — to win, 16-1.

Hailey Harris dominated all phases of the game. After giving up a run, she induced a pop up to shortstop Meghan Moore, who then threw out Madison Lamprecht before she tagged up at first base. That was all Northern Nash would get. The Lady Knights sent six more to the plate. Harris fanned each one of them, finishing with 10 strikeouts in five innings.

Her performance at the plate even better. She had two hits — a triple and a single — in the third stanza to push across three runs. In the fourth, Harris took the first pitch from Northern Nash pitcher Jenna McKenney and lifted it over the right-field fence for a three-run homer.

“I’ve just been practicing as hard as I can and working with my team. It’s all I can do,” Harris said.

The first six Lady Pack batters to take the plate in the bottom of the third all reached. Chaleigh Baynor led off by sending a high pitch down the left-field line for a double. Meghan Horton laid down a bunt and safely reached first when Baynor beat out the throw to third.

Harris’ triple cleared Baynor and Horton to take the lead in one swing of the bat. She came in when Moore laid a bunt down on the first-base line.

Jordan Pierce singled. She and Moore scored on Abbigail Tucker’s double to centerfield. Northern Nash was able to retire two Lady Pack batters in a row, but another set of hits from Baynor and Harris sandwiched between a fielding error pushed Washington’s lead to 8-1 after three innings.

Mary B. Dixon greets Jordan Pierce at the plate after hitting a home run in the fourth inning.

“We had a good game (on Thursday) against Northside,” coach Doug Whitehead said. “In softball, hitting is contagious. When one starts hitting, they all think they can hit. That’s basically what happened tonight.

“We had some talks this week. The girls need to have some confidence in themselves. Evidently, they listened.”

After Harris struck out the side, the first four Lady Pack batters in the fourth reached as the home side poured in another eight runs. Lynch’s single to shallow left field scored Pierce and Mary B. Dixon.

Horton pushed across two more before Harris and Pierce each drilled two-out bombs. Pierce’s cleared the left-field fence.

“I just saw a ball I really liked, so I went for it. It was great,” Pierce said. Harris said she saw her home-run pitch come inside, which is right where she likes it. “It’s awesome. I couldn’t ask for a better pitcher throughout my season or my high-school career. She’s my good friend. … To be able to hit home runs with her is just great.”

Washington ends a long week with back-to-back wins. The Lady Pack will be back in action Tuesday at Riverside. It will be looking to get one back after dropping a 4-2 decision to the same club on March 3.
