GREENVILLE — The No. 8 East Carolina baseball team swept a doubleheader to salvage a series win against Charlotte on Saturday.
Following a Charlie Yorgen walkoff home run in game one of the Saturday slate, Jacob Wolfe shut down the 49ers (10-6) line up that had scored seven runs earlier in the day.
The senior southpaw cruised through seven innings, allowing just two hits and two walks. His success came from keeping the ball low in the zone and letting his defense make plays behind him. Of the 20 outs recorded by Wolfe, 13 came off groundouts around the infield.
“My slider was there but my changeup was the most key pitch today,” Wolfe said after the game two win. “But of course I have to thank my defense. I’m a groundball guy and the defense behind me was great. I was able to get all those groundball outs and push through until the seventh.”
Sophomore Chris Holba came in in the eighth inning and set down all six batters he faced to nail down a save and a series win for the Pirates (12-4).
After an offensive marathon in game one Saturday, the second game featured just three runs, all from ECU’s side. The lone RBI of the game came off the bat of freshman Spencer Brickhouse, who plated fellow freshman Dusty Baker with a sac fly in the eighth inning to give ECU its final-score lead of 3-0.
Senior second baseman Charlie Yorgen opened the scoring as he came home on a passed ball in the first inning. Eric Tyler came home on a wild pitch in the seventh frame to give Holba a two-run lead to work with.
Game one of the doubleheader featured a 17-run offensive shootout that fell ECU’s way after a rocky ninth inning in the field for the Pirates. Leading 7-3 headed into the ninth, freshman pitcher Tyler Smith recorded a strikeout before allowing a double to Charlotte’s Reece Hampton. Smith was pulled in favor of sophomore Matt Bridges.
Hampton scored on a throwing error by shortstop Turner Brown. Jackson Mims, who was a Pirate once upon a time, made it a one-run game with a two-run home run.
T.J. Nitchting tied the game after he reached first on a single and later scored on a wild pitch thrown by ECU closer Joe Ingle. Ingle worked a clean 10th frame after the Pirate offense was shut down in the bottom half of the ninth.
Patience at the plate helped deliver ECU the win. With two outs, freshman Bryant Packard drew a full-count walk and Baker singled one batter later. In a 3-1 count, Yorgen got the fastball he was looking for and belted it over the right field wall to end the game and give ECU its first win of the series.
“That was a great team win and every experience is a learning experience,” Yorgen said. “(We) blew the lead, then having the toughness to come back, that’s why we do what we do in the fall, and that’s why we prepare the way that we do. Overall, that’s a great team win.”
Aside from the walk off, ECU was anchored by the longball. In the second inning, Travis Watkins belted his third career grand slam in the second inning to put ECU up 6-0 at the time.
Packard hit his first career home run in the sixth inning. Freshman Trey Benton threw five innings in his start and allowed just one earned run on two hits. Senior Bryce Harman made his first appearance in game one of the double header as a defensive replacement and had an at bat before starting in game two Saturday. He was a combined 0-for-4 at the plate, but played well defensively.
With senior ace Evan Kruczynski on the shelf for a few weeks, freshman Jake Agnos took the ball Friday night against Charlotte. He held the 49ers scoreless through his six innings and allowed five hits. Sam Lanier relieved him and pitched into the ninth, where he allowed a lead-off double to start the inning.
ECU failed to get anything going offensively as former ECU signee Colton Laws shut down the Pirates to the tune of three hits over 7 1/3 innings of work.
“Their starter was really good a locating his fastball, both sides of the plate,” ECU head coach Cliff Godwin said. “Jake (Agnos) is still coming along with his command he had those (four walks). If he cuts down on some of those, he probably pitches into the seventh. He did fine but if he walks a few less guys maybe we can get him a little deeper into games.”
ECU stayed at No. 8 in Baseball America’s weekly poll and will face Duke today at 4 p.m., rather than Wednesday as originally scheduled.
