Stately and elegant, great egrets are sometimes seen in ponds and impoundments of the Pungo Unit at Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. Great egrets are wading birds that mainly eat fish, but they will also feed on a wide variety of insects, reptiles, amphibians and even small mammals.
