Local citizens have an opportunity to apply for ownership of a new home to be built in Hyde County by Habitat for Humanity.
Supported by a grant from the State Employees’ Credit Union Foundation, Habitat for Humanity plans to build one house in each of the state’s 100 counties.
The application period for Hyde County will be from March 27-April 10.
The Hyde County Department of Social Services will help coordinate the recruitment and selection of a homeowner. Final decisions regarding an eligible homebuyer will be made by Habitat for Humanity of North Carolina. Following the selection of a homeowner, an appropriate construction site will be determined based on the selection of the homeowner. Volunteers may help with the construction of the home, which may be a new home or a rehabilitation of an existing home.
Applications will be available at the following locations in Hyde County:
- Hyde County Government Center
- Hyde County Department of Social Services
Habitat for Humanity will offer the homeowner zero-percent financing on the mortgage loan for the house. Qualifying applicants must live or work in the county where the house will be located. The successful applicant must also complete a certain number of required hours of volunteer construction (sweat equity) or other relevant volunteer work during the building of the home and attend homeowner education classes.
In addition, the State Employees’ Credit Union “Challenge,” a special mortgage program, will be highlighted, as will other lending programs that will assist individuals and families in their efforts to purchase their own homes.
