Last week’s weather took out many of the midweek games that were scheduled. The beginning of the week started with an inter-county matchup between Terra Ceia and TEACH. It ended with Northside delving into conference competition while Washington took a stab at picking up last-minute momentum before its league openers.

The Panthers’ undefeated start came to an end in a one-run loss to Pamlico County, but they still seem geared for a strong run this season. The Knights remained perfect early in their campaign, and Washington’s teams are gaining traction.

Here are the standouts from the past week.

 

TRIPP BARFIELD, WASHINGTON

Tripp Barfield was significant in Washington going 2-1 last week. He started the week with a complete-game in a win over Riverside, 7-5. He conceded five runs (none earned) on five hits and fanned four. The offense was able to provide enough run support to make up for the four errors in the field.

Barfield’s impact in Friday’s 15-7 win over Ayden-Grifton came at the plate instead of on the mound. The senior had his best offensive game of his career. He was 4-for-5 with three runs and four RBI — accounting for almost half the Pam Pack’s scoring output.

 

RACHEL LANG, NORTHSIDE

Northside’s only game last week was a 3-0 victory over 1-A Coastal Plains Conference foe Pamlico County. Rachel Lang was instrumental in the Lady Panthers’ second league win. She pitched seven full frames of shutout softball.

Lang gave up four hits, walked none and struck out six during the game. She also batted in one of Northside’s three runs in the game. The win gives the Lady Panthers a bit of steam heading into Tuesday’s trip to Lejeune.

 

AUSTIN ROSCOE, TERRA CEIA

Weather derailed a bit of Terra Ceia’s schedule last week, but Austin Roscoe was able to help lead the Knights to a win in the one game they did play. He was the baseball equivalent of a Swiss army knife in a 12-2 win over TEACH last Monday.

Roscoe started the game on the hump. He rolled through three frames, giving up just one hit and striking out six. He then traded spots with catcher Quentin Van Essendelft. He was an effective backstop in the final three frames. He also had a hit and accounted for two runs.

 

ABBIGAIL TUCKER, WASHINGTON

Abbigail Tucker gave Washington’s softball team a last-minute shot in the arm on Friday. A day after getting blown out by South Central, Tucker pitched a five-inning shutout of Northern Nash to complete the season sweep.

In addition to a nine-strikeout performance, Tucker was effective at the plate. She went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and two RBI. The freshman helped give the Lady Pack some momentum heading into its 2-A Eastern Plains Conference opener at Farmville Central on Tuesday.
