There’s an empty white building on John Small Avenue.

A few weeks ago, the tenants at 1385 John Small Ave. in Washington, which included NCWorks Career Center, the Mid-East Commission and United Way, moved out.

NCWorks and the Mid-East Commission moved to 1502 N. Market St., just behind Beaufort Monument Co. United Way is still looking for a new permanent space.

Darone Dancy, manager at NCWorks, said they moved out on Feb. 27 because the Mid-East Commission, which was subleasing the space, chose not to renew the lease. Since then, people have been confused about where to find those services, Dancy said.

“People come in every day asking, you know, ‘Hey, I went over there. I didn’t know you’d moved,’” he said. “We get that all the time.”

NCWorks offers a variety of services, including job-seeking assistance, resume writing, training with Beaufort County Community College, help with unemployment claims, veteran services, employer assistance to find job seekers and community partnerships.

The Mid-East Commission works with local governments to improve residents’ quality of life. United Way seeks to help families through education, health care and financial initiatives, working to improve overall quality of life.

Dancy said NCWorks had occupied its previous space for about three years. Its new location on North Market Street will be temporary, as well, because the state mandated that it could only remain there for six months.

Although it hasn’t been set in stone, Dancy said he is hoping NCWorks can simply move to the suite next door after the six months is up.

The NCWorks staff is working on getting the word out to people, and that goes hand in hand with its ongoing efforts to rebrand itself from the Employment Security Commission to NCWorks, according to Dancy. He said NCWorks has been in contact with civic groups to help increase the public’s knowledge about the services it offers.

Dancy said he wants people to know the services are still available and to know where to find them.
