On March 11, 20 members of Chocowinity Middle School’s Run/Walk Club participated in a free 5K race sponsored by the City of Greenville. One student, competing in his first race, missed getting a medal by three seconds. The Run/Walk Club at CMS is sponsored by sixth-grade teacher Lisa Staats, who was awarded a Bright Ideas Grant from Tideland Electric Membership Corp. to purchase the supplies needed for the club. Staats opened the club up to sixth-grade students only during its initial year with 27 students coming to the first meeting. The size of the group has grown to 48 sixth-graders out of a total enrollment of 106 as the school year has progressed. Staats and the group plan to enter several other races before the end of the school year. Luis Tello competes in his first 5K race.
