Lady Seahawks win in extra innings
TRENTON — Maggie Craig’s homer to left field in the eighth inning was enough to life Southside to its seventh-straight win, 9-8, over Jones Senior. The Lady Seahawks uncharacteristically committed 11 errors in the field, but were able to able to survive on timely offense.
Of the eight runs scored by the Lady Trojans, only one was charged to Southside pitcher Alyssa McLawhorn. She conceded four hits, four walks and struck out a dozen over eight innings.
Southside owned a 3-2 lead at the end of the first. Jones Senior scored three in the second and added two more in the fourth to build a 7-3 advantage over halfway through. The Lady Seahawks took a marginal lead with five runs between the fifth and sixth before Jones Senior got one in the bottom of the sixth to knot things at 8-8.
Southside pushed one across in the top of the eighth and bottled up the opposition’s offense to hang on for the win.
Craig dominated at the plate. She went 4-of-5 with two doubles and the aforementioned home run to tally four runs and four RBI. Taylor Langley and Hannah Paramore each notched a pair of hits.
Southside’s home meeting with Pamlico County on Tuesday was pushed back to Wednesday due to weather.
Southside earns first CPC win
TRENTON — After coming up short in a nine-inning loss to Bear Grass, Southside was able to top Jones Senior, 6-1, on Monday to earn its first 1-A Coastal Plains Conference win.
The Seahawks got stout pitching from Marshall Medlock and Brantley Cutler. The two split the seven innings down the middle. Cutler gave up an unearned run on two hits in 3 2/3 innings. Medlock gave up a hit, no runs and fanned four over his 3 1/3 innings on the bump.
Both Southside and Jones Senior pushed one across in the first frame. Medlock, Cutler and the defense behind them did well to keep the Trojans at bay after that. It set up the Seahawks to run away with the game after a four-run third inning.
Cutler and Demetrius Ebron led the team with two hits apiece. Cutler had two RBI, and the six runs were all scored by different players.
Southside’s game against Pamlico County on Tuesday was postponed to Wednesday due to the weather.
Southside coasts past Kinston
CHOCOWINITY — Sarah Shingleton had a hat trick and Sindy Chavez found twine twice as Southside topped Kinston, 5-0, at home on Monday. It marked the Lady Seahawks’ third win of the season.
Southside scored thrice in the first half before adding a pair of goals in the second to seal the victory. The defense in front of goalkeeper Carleigh Findley was only tasked with one shot on goal.
The Lady Seahawks will play their first 1-A Coastal Plains Conference game in program history on Thursday against Lejeune.
Unity softball hammers Bethel-Askewville
CHOCOWINITY — Unity extended its undefeated start to six in a row Monday when it breezed past Bethel-Askewville, 15-5. The girls started off a bit rusty and found themselves at a 4-2 disadvantage after two innings, but rebounded for a lopsided win.
Unity got a pair of double plays to shift the momentum. It was also able to prevent a run on a bunt. That allowed pitcher Macy Main to settle in.
Offensively, Grace Bumpass led the effort as she reached base on all four of her at-bats. She scored four runs, and Main improved to 5-0 on the season.
