The Down East Seniors Club held its May 10 meeting at the Blind Center of North Carolina in Washington. President Stewart Rumley led the meeting. Jim Hackney played for the singing of “God Bless America” and gave the invocation. Dick Paul provided humor.
Rumley introduced his daughter, Vail Rumley, as the guest speaker. She serves as the news editor of the Washington Daily News in addition to being a reporter. The WDN focuses on providing detailed coverage of local news that is not available elsewhere. The editorial staff consists of two full time reporters, one part-time reporter and a sports reporter. All reporters have to take their own photographs. Her usual daily routine is to first check email addressed to her, then email addressed to the newsroom, state news items, community calendar items, and obituaries. All items from these sources that will be published must be edited as needed and put into a uniform format. All the reporters go out to cover happenings as needed to get the story. Once a day’s edition is composed, it is transmitted to Ahoskie where the papers are printed. Then they are shipped to Washington to be delivered. The WDN staff also produces “Washington the Magazine” and several special sections for the newspaper from time to time.
Rudy Burns won the 50/50 drawing.
