WINDSOR — Heritage Collegiate Leadership Academy sought out U.S. Cellular’s mobile expertise to provide tablets to each student at the academy.
The use of tablets by all 314 students provides a blended learning environment, combining traditional classroom instruction with technology driven curriculums. The tablets offer individual learning time for students and the flexibility for staff to customize curriculum for students to complete at their own pace.
“We are thrilled to finally be able to fulfill our goal to bring 1:1 technology to our K-5 scholars at Heritage Collegiate Leadership Academy. Technology is our gateway to the future. These tablets are opening up the world to our scholars who reside in rural northeastern North Carolina,” said Dr. Kashi Bazemore-Hall, founding director, Heritage Collegiate Leadership Academy.
Each student is equipped with an LG G Pad tablet that is used throughout the school day.
Students use these devices for every class offered at Heritage Leadership Academy. The tablets are preloaded with applications to help students with math, science, reading and other subjects. Students also utilize the tablets for notetaking, as well as other assignments in the classroom. The scholars who serve in the Yearbook Club are even using their tablets to take photos and video footage for the school’s first digital yearbook.
“At U.S. Cellular, we provide innovative technology solutions to help close the achievement gap and improve educational opportunities for students here in eastern North Carolina and across the country,” said Jeff Rothrock, U.S. Cellular’s director of business sales in eastern North Carolina. “We continue to see schools, like Heritage Collegiate Leadership Academy, utilize wireless technology to improve and individualize the classroom experience for students.”
Bazemore-Hall met with U.S. Cellular representatives in 2016 about purchasing tablets for students at Heritage Collegiate Leadership Academy. In November 2016, kindergarten, first- and second-grade students were provided tablets for use in the classroom. Earlier this year, students in grades third through fifth received tablets.
U.S. Cellular is committed to working with the school to help meet all its technology needs. In fact, in 2016, U.S. Cellular equipped all the school buses for Heritage Collegiate Leadership Academy with GPS tracking technology to ensure the safety and security of all students using bus service. This technology allows school staff to track the vehicle speed, number of stops and exact location of each bus.
