Boys & Girls Club will undergo renovations

The Boys & Girls Club of Washington is about to get a full makeover.

The Washington unit is the recipient of a $50,000 grant given by Lowe’s Home Improvement, a national partner of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The organization aims to offer young people a safe environment to learn and play.

“To create the largest single initiative ever undertaken by Lowe’s and Boys & Girls Clubs of America, one Club in each state was selected from Clubs in need of significant repairs and improvements,” a press release stated.

The North Carolina winner was the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain, and all of the funds will help give the Washington unit a refreshed, enhanced facility.

“It’s getting a $50,000 facelift,” Theresa Gilmore, vice president of development and external affairs, said.

The renovations will include resurfacing all the floors, tiles and fixing walls, re-doing the bathrooms and replacing the low-bearing walls, according to Gilmore.

Gilmore said the Washington unit serves more than 100 children a day, and the everyday wear and tear of serving those children is why improvements are needed.

Not only will it create a better creative outlet for the children, it will also give the children a sense of pride about their club that they might not have had before, Gilmore said.

“I truly believe that the kids are going to have more respect for their club. When they see the community and big companies like Lowe’s put this work in, they’ll have a raised self-esteem. … They’ll think that people care about them, that people want to help them,” Gilmore said.

She said no updates have been done to the Washington unit in years, except for a new roof in 2013, so these renovations are long awaited. This isn’t the first time Gilmore applied for the grant.

“When I got this job in 2013, I applied for the same grant. We’ve been trying to get it every year since,” Gilmore said.

The renovations have to be completed by the end of the year. As part of the agreement with Lowe’s, the club will hold an unveiling in January.
