Over 100 people filled Washington High School’s gym with enthusiasm and a glimmer of hope on Friday night.
Relay for Life celebrated over two decades of fighting cancer with another successful event filled with emotion. Survivors, team members and volunteers gathered in the gym to honor their loved ones who have been affected by cancer.
The event raked in over $93,000 for cancer research and the American Cancer Society, according to event organizer Carol Rose. That number is a dip from last year’s $107,000, but Rose was still grateful for the fundraising efforts.
“For the area and the size of this community, it’s a pretty good chunk of change. It’s a significant amount,” Rose said.
Christ Crusaders 4 A Cure raised $13,300 and took home first place in amount of funds raised for the second year in a row. Second place went to the Hyde County Warriors with $10,000, and third place was awarded to Mary’s Chapel Christian Church with $9,200, according to Rose. Rose also said the team spirit award went to the Chocowinity Primary team and the rookie award went to the Cure Creators.
Pam Warren, Christ Crusaders 4 A Cure team captain, said her team was especially happy to bring home first place this time around.
“My team was elated,” Warren said. “It was so special because these were the only two years we’ve won first place, and both years were the years we’ve honored our pastor. It meant even more because of that.”
A bagpipe rendition of “Amazing Grace” wrapped up the night as over 100 luminaries lit up the gym, according to Rose.
“It sort of brings that real visual aspect of cancer to the event. … Every one of those luminaries stood for somebody,” Rose said.
The Relay for Life organizers plan to take a short break for a few months, but then get right back into planning for 2018.
Rose said there is still time to fight back against cancer with Relay for Life. Donations will be accepted until Aug. 31.
