The Down East Seniors Club met on June 21 at the Blind Center of North Carolina in Washington. Vice President Chip Ide presided. Jim Hackney played for the singing of “God Bless America.” After the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, Charles Smith gave the invocation. Ed Hamrick gave factoids on June 21 events from our nation’s history. Dick Paul provided humor. Birthdays and anniversaries were recognized.

Gene Schwartz introduced the guest speaker, Dr. Billy Jones, a retired dermatologist, who practiced for many years in Greenville. Jones gave an interesting presentation on the physiology of skin and hair. He explained the practical functions of hair on mammals as well as the role that grooming and appearance plays in our society. We learned that hair care is a huge business in our country that amounts to $4 billion per year. Jones explained the growth cycle of hair, causes for hair loss and treatments and remedies for some cases. We appreciate Dr. Jones for sharing his knowledge with us.

The meeting ended with the 50/50 drawing won by Jones.
